RAAP Staff Community Organizers (Door-to-Door Canvass)

At the very, very beginning, RAAP had Community Organizers. The Rape Assistance and Awareness Program's founders, experienced in grassroots fundraising, organized a door-to-door canvass in 1983 to raise money in order to start metro-Denver's first rape crisis center. (Please see RAAP's History for more on how RAAP was founded.)

Thus began a long tradition of fundraising and educating the community, one-on-one, through our Community Organizing department. "The Canvass" is a group of dedicated, passionate, and high-energy individuals. Each weekday evening and some Sunday afternoons will find them out in our metro-Denver neighborhoods knocking on doors and talking to our neighbors.

The Canvass educates the public about the issue of sexual violence, RAAP's programs and services, and ways to support RAAP, including cash and in-kind donations and volunteer opportunities.

The Canvass strives to visit each neighborhood on an annual basis and thus reaches hundreds of people throughout metro-Denver each day. Perhaps we will be in your neighborhood this week!

  • Why does RAAP send men and women into the community from 4 to 9 pm?
RAAP has been sending men and women out into the community since its inception. Men and women should be involved with ending sexual violence in our community, and sending them door to door ensures that each household is reached in a personable setting. We go out from 4 to 9 pm because that is when the majority of people are home.

  • Is it safe for men and women to go door to door?
We believe that it is safe, as well as our responsibility to take a stance against sexual violence in this manner. We are always in a group and we do have safety in mind first.

  • Are the people knocking on my door really legitimate?
RAAP has a canvass staff of 10 to 30 adults in the community from 4 to 9 pm on any given evening (1 to 5 pm on weekends). All of RAAP staff has identification, a permit from the state, a copy of our 501(c) 3 status and they have all undergone a thorough background check.
